Breakthrough: Pfizer Vaccine More Effective Than Previously Thought

( On Wednesday, pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced that the vaccine they developed to protect people from COVID-19 is more effective than they originally thought.

The vaccine, which was the first one to be announced immediately after the media called the presidential election for Joe Biden, is now understood to be at least 95% effective. The latest data from the company’s stage three trials show that it could be the most effective vaccine made so far, providing important protection for the most vulnerable in society.

Pfizer announced that the primary efficacy analysis of the trials shows that one month after the first dose of the vaccine, it is 95% effective. The vaccine, when administered, will be injected in two parts, spaced three weeks apart.

The original claim of 90% effectiveness announced on November 9 was based on earlier data.

“The study results mark an important step in this historic eight-month journey to bring forward a vaccine capable of helping to end this devastating pandemic,” Pfizer CEO Dr. Albert Bourla said.

“We continue to move at the speed of science to compile all the data collected thus far and share with regulators around the world,” he added.

The announcement is great for America, and for President Donald Trump – though he probably would have preferred to get the news before the election.

The breakthrough was a result of Operation Warp Speed, a program put in place by the president that allowed several bureaucratic processes to move forward at the same time and reduce the time it took to develop the vaccine and confirm that it is safe. Operation Warp Speed also invested billions of dollars into vaccines and encouraged pharmaceutical companies to work quickly to get a vaccine to market.

The rollout of the vaccine is expected to start soon, too. If approved by the Food and Drug Administration, Pfizer may immediately start shipping the vaccine.

“Those boxes are isothermic boxes that have a GPS and also a tempo meter so we know at any point where the box is and what is the temperature so if something goes wrong, which we don’t anticipate, we will not use the vaccine. Every box is a small box like that and can take 1,000 to 5,000 doses. And when we ship it, we don’t need to use refrigeration. So we can ship it in cars, trucks, planes, boats, whatever. In the US, we will ship to most of the places overnight,” Dr. Bourla explained this week.

Could the pandemic be over in months thanks to President Donald Trump’s foresight?
