(PoliticalLookout.com)- On Thursday, two brothers who admitted that they helped disgraced actor Jussie Smollett set up a fake hate crime announced that they will continue working with prosecutors and testify against him in court. The brothers, who assisted in staging a homophobic and racist attack in Chicago in 2019, previously said that they would stop working with prosecutors but have now changed their minds.
It’s yet another bizarre twist in the tale, which disgraced actor Jussie Smollett and exposed just how much of an industry fake hate crimes have become. Attorney Gloria Schmidt Rodriguez announced this week that the two brothers had changed their minds as a result a 9mm handgun was seized during a search of their home last year, after it went missing. Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo will now assist the prosecution in obtaining facts about the staged hate crime, and could be the reason why Smollett is (potentially) put behind bars.
“Abel and Ola will recommence their cooperation in the Smollett case now that the handgun has been produced by the Special Prosecutor’s Office,” the attorney said. In a separate letter, Rodriguez also said that the pair “stand ready to testify at trial” which will be overseen by Special Prosecutor Dan Webb.
The U-turn came only hours after various media outlets reported that the brothers had finished their cooperation with prosecutors because of the missing handgun. They claimed that they feared the lawyers from the police department were treating them like suspects.
David Erickson, formerly a state appellate judge who is now a teacher, said that their argument wasn’t substantial from the beginning because they have already testified in front of a grand jury. For that reason, prosecutors could have gone ahead and read their testimony in court anyway.
What they said is already under oath on paper,” he said.
In case you missed the case, let’s take a look at what happened. It all started when Smollett claimed that two attackers said he was in “MAGA Country,” before going on to physically assault him. It turned out, though, that Smollett paid both men $3,500 each to stage the attack. He was later charged with lying to the police.
