(PoliticalLookout.com)- President Donald Trump followed through with yet another campaign promise on Friday, signing four new executive orders that dramatically lower the price of many prescription drugs for Americans. Among those affected by the new dramatic price drops are epinephrine and insulin.
On Friday, the Health and Human Services Department announced that the orders will “end a shadowy system of kickbacks by middlemen that lurks behind the high out-of-pocket costs many Americans face at the pharmacy counter.” The department also said that the orders will give Americans more options when it comes to purchasing drugs.
It’s an emotive issue for many Americans as drug prices have a direct impact on the quality of the lives of millions of people. Lower drug prices mean people on lower incomes can access the drugs they need for less, and stop making difficult choices between living and living well.
During the signing ceremony, President Trump said that for too long the high cost of EpiPens and insulin have impacted the ability of low-income people to access the drugs they need.
“The four orders I’m signing today will be on the prescription drug market in terms of pricing and everything else to make these medications affordable and accessible for all Americans,” he said.
“The first order will require federal community health centers to pass the giant discounts they received from drug companies on insulin and EpiPens directly to their patients. You know insulin became so expensive because people weren’t able to use it. They desperately needed it.”
During President Trump’s years in office so far, drug companies have been able to produce drugs more cheaply, but until now many of those discounts have not been passed on to customers. Now they are.
“We have it to a level you’re not going to believe,” Trump added. “EpiPens, likewise you have been hearing horrible stories about EpiPens over the last six or seven years, horrible, horrible, horrible increases for where they went to almost nothing to massive amounts of money. We’re changing that right now.”
The price of insulin for affected patients, the president explained, will be reduced to “pennies a day.”
President Trump slammed providers for receiving discounts and not passing them onto their poorest patients.
The fourth executive order that Trump signed, and which he described as the “granddaddy of them all” will end the “global freeloading on the backs of American patients and American seniors.” The order means that Americans will no longer pay higher prices for drugs while other nations pay significantly less.
